Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for considering a custom piece from JLB Crafted Grain.

Each project is thoughtfully designed and built by hand in my Louisville, Kentucky workshop. My goal is simple: to create furniture that feels intentional, functional, and meant to last.

Here are answers to some commonly asked questions..

  • Custom means your piece is designed specifically for you — your space, your needs, your style.

Dimensions, wood species, finishes, and details are thoughtfully selected to suit your home. No two builds are exactly alike, because no two homes — or families — are exactly alike.

  • It begins with a conversation. You’ll share your ideas, inspiration photos, dimensions, timeline, and budget range. From there, I’ll develop a quote and, when needed, drawings or renderings to help visualize the piece.

Your deposit secures your build and allows me to obtain the materials needed. During the build phase, I’ll provide updates so you can follow along as your piece takes shape.

Final payment is due prior to delivery or pickup.

  • Pricing reflects the materials, time, and craftsmanship involved in creating a your piece.

    Factors include:

    • Size and dimensions

    • Wood species

    • Complexity of design

    • Joinery and construction methods

    • Finish process

    • Hardware selections

Each piece is built from solid hardwood and quality cabinet-grade materials, using construction methods designed for durability and longevity. My intention is to create furniture that lasts for decades — not just a few years.

  • That’s a completely fair question.

There is absolutely a place for affordable, ready-to-assemble furniture. It can be practical and convenient, especially for temporary needs.

Custom furniture serves a different purpose.

When you choose a custom piece from JLB Crafted Grain, you’re choosing something made slowly and intentionally — built from solid wood and crafted by hand in my workshop. It’s designed specifically for your home, not a warehouse shelf.

Real wood carries depth and character. It moves with the seasons. It develops richness over time. Small signs of use become part of its story rather than the end of it.

My hope is to create pieces that grow with your family — furniture that doesn’t need replacing, but instead becomes part of your home for years to come.

Custom isn’t about comparison. It’s about longevity, craftsmanship, and something made just for you.

  • I primarily work with solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, maple, and other domestic species. However, because I LOVE evergreens and my personal style is a minimal, Scandinavian vibe, I have built several pieces using framing lumber and pine. Cabinet-grade plywood is used where structural stability is important and/or to reduce total cost of project.

I avoid MDF and particle board in structural components.

Because wood is a natural material, variations in grain, tone, and texture are expected — and celebrated.

  • Lead times vary depending on the size of the project and current workload. Most custom pieces take approximately 3-5 weeks from deposit to completion.

You will receive a projected timeline before committing so expectations are clear from the beginning.

  • Built-ins are custom pieces that are designed and constructed specifically for a fixed location within your home (like kitchen cabinets!).

Unlike freestanding furniture, built-ins are permanently installed and integrated into the architecture of a space. They may span wall-to-wall or floor-to-ceiling and are tailored precisely to your room’s dimensions.

    Examples of built-ins include:

    • Bookshelves surrounding a fireplace

    • Window seats with storage

    • Mudroom benches and cabinetry

    • Entertainment centers

    • Wall-to-wall wardrobes

    • Office cabinetry

Because built-ins are measured and crafted for a specific space, they create a seamless, intentional look — as though they’ve always been part of the home.

Each built-in project is custom measured to ensure proper fit, alignment, and finish.

  • Local delivery within the Louisville area is available. I also keep myself very accessible to the client and pick up from my workshop is also an option!

Shipping may be available for select projects — please inquire for details.

  • I can work to coordinate with existing tones and finishes. Because wood species and aging vary, exact matches cannot be guaranteed, but I always strive for cohesive, thoughtful results.

  • Because each piece is custom-built for a specific client, all sales are final. If an issue arises, I am committed to working with you to find a fair and reasonable solution.
